Das "ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability" ist ein weltweite Organisation von Städten, Gemeinden und Landkreisen für Umweltschutz und nachhaltige Entwicklung. Urspünglich wurde der Verband unter der Bezeichnung "International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives" beim ersten Weltkongresses von Kommunen für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung im September 1990 bei den Vereinten Nationen in New York gegründet (siehe auch URL: https://iclei.org/join/).
Die Mitgliederversammlung (Council) beschloss im Jahr 2003 die Umbenennung. Der Sitz des Vereins ist Bonn.
