Das iNaturalist Network ist eine gemeinsame Initiative von der California Academy of Sciences und der National Geographic Society. Unter dem Motto „Connect with Nature!“ betreiben die California Academy of Sciences und die National Geographic Society, beides sind „nonprofit organizations“ das Portal von iNaturalist und verbinden Akteure miteinander im Netzwerk.
Das iNaturalist Network schreibt dazu: „One of the world’s most popular nature apps, iNaturalist helps you identify the plants and animals around you. Get connected with a community of over a million scientists and naturalists who can help you learn more about nature! What’s more, by recording and sharing your observations, you’ll create research quality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature.“ (s.u.).
Zur App und Webseite informiert iNaturalist Network mit dieser Kurzinformation: „The iNaturalist Network is a collection of localized websites that are fully connected to the global iNaturalist community. Network sites are supported by local institutions that promote local use and facilitate the use of data from iNaturalist to benefit local biodiversity. They have access to true coordinates within their geographic areas that are automatically obscured from public view in order to better protect threatened species.“ (s.u.).,
sowie auf Deutsch: „Das iNaturalist-Netzwerk ist eine Sammlung lokalisierter Websites, die vollständig mit der globalen iNaturalist-Community verbunden sind. Netzwerkstandorte werden von lokalen Institutionen unterstützt, die die lokale Nutzung fördern und die Nutzung von Daten von iNaturalist zum Nutzen der lokalen Artenvielfalt erleichtern. Sie haben Zugriff auf echte Koordinaten innerhalb ihrer geografischen Gebiete, die automatisch vor der Öffentlichkeit verborgen bleiben, um bedrohte Arten besser zu schützen.“ (s.u.).
